Staff Sergeant Robert Miller

In today's installment of Fallen Heroes, we pay tribute to Robert J. Miller, who led a Special Forces team on a reconnaissance mission in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province when they were ambushed by insurgents. Without hesitation, Miller charged forward, drawing enemy fire to protect his team. Despite being wounded, he continued to fight, allowing his teammates to regroup and call for support. His heroic actions saved many lives, and he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

Robert J. Miller enlisted in the U.S. Army in August 2003, driven by a desire to serve his country. He quickly proved himself, excelling during training and showing leadership potential. Miller was later selected for Special Forces training, earning his Green Beret in 2005. His determination and skill made him a standout soldier within the elite 3rd Special Forces Group.
On January 25, 2008,  Miller and his team were patrolling through treacherous terrain in the mountainous Kunar Province, when they were ambushed by a large, well-coordinated enemy force. Realizing the severity of the situation and that his team was in danger of being overrun, Miller immediately took action. He moved forward, directly into enemy fire, to engage the insurgents and drew their attention away from his teammates. Despite being hit by enemy fire, he continued to fight, using his machine gun to lay down suppressive fire.

Miller’s selfless actions allowed his team to reorganize and call for air support. Despite his injuries, he continued to fight, protecting his fellow soldiers until he was mortally wounded. His bravery and leadership in the face of overwhelming odds saved the lives of his team members and ensured the success of the mission.

Miller was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, when President Obama recounted "Rob seemed to disappear into clouds of dust and debris, but his team could hear him on the radio, still calling out the enemy's position. They could hear his weapon still firing as he provided cover for his men."
