Sgt. Rafael Peralta

In today’s Fallen Heroes tribute, we honor Sergeant Rafael Peralta, a Marine who gave his life during the Battle of Fallujah in 2004. Known for his incredible selflessness, Peralta's actions saved the lives of his fellow Marines. His legacy of courage and sacrifice continues to inspire generations.

Sergeant Rafael Peralta, an immigrant from Mexico who came to the U.S. in search of a better life, was serving with the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines. On November 15, 2004, during Operation al Fajr, also known as the Second Battle of Fallujah, Sergeant Rafael Peralta and his squad cleared six houses successfully. At the seventh house, as the point man opened a door, they were met with a barrage of close-range automatic weapons fire from insurgents. While trying to escape the line of fire, Peralta was critically wounded. As the insurgents retreated, they threw a grenade, which landed near Peralta’s head. Without hesitation, Peralta pulled the grenade to his body, absorbing the blast and saving the lives of nearby Marines. Despite succumbing to his injuries, Peralta's heroic sacrifice saved his brothers in arms and embodied his unwavering commitment to his comrades and country. His actions that day embodied the highest ideals of bravery, sacrifice, and devotion, leaving behind a legacy of heroism that continues to inspire.

Peralta’s heroic actions that day showcased his unwavering dedication and courage, as he selflessly sacrificed his life to save his fellow Marines. His bravery inspired those around him and exemplified the highest ideals of service. For his extraordinary heroism, Peralta was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross, a testament to his ultimate sacrifice and selflessness.
